The MTV Video Music Awards happened last night. They happened and they were pretty much a travesty--from Rebel Wilson making light of police brutality to Miley's rampant cultural appropriation (what else is new?). They happened. The highlight of the evening (and what will likely inspire a million think pieces) was Nicki dragging Miley Cyrus for talking about Nicki in the press. Nicki had the AUDACITY to tweet about the lack of representation of women of color amongst the VMA nominees and Miley felt that it was her place to speak on the issue, so Nicki decided to call her out for it. People are going to cry about how big bad Nicki was so mean to poor little Miley and everybody and they Mama (including the dammed New Black) is going to jump to defend Miley. We are here for Nicki. And that performance of Trini Girls was everything. Nicki Minaj always says it like it is and she is our feminist hero in our little online corner of the world.
Recently, I heard someone say that there is no political music today, no protest anthems, and no artists willing to use their platforms to speak out against white supremacy. I laughed at them.
