Kim Foster, the founder of For Harriet, (which we love!) has some words for us in the wake of the controversy surrounding Sasha and Malia Obama and their "omg so over it!" expressions during the official White House turkey pardoning. Elizabeth Lauten was a communications director for republican representative Stephen Fincher of Tennessee. I say "was," because she resigned from her position after a Facebook post she authored blasting Sasha and Malia went viral.
Yikes. A lot of criticism for rolling your eyes at a couple of turkeys. Taking apart their apparel, insinuating they look like they belong in a bar, (which is a bizarre statement to make about a perfectly modest-looking 13 and 16 year old children...) noting that their ivy-league educated, intelligent and successful parents are not good role models, there's a lot to upack there. Why so much contempt for kids being kids? Kimberly Foster and we here at Womanist Expressions know that in America, black children are not viewed as children but rather as problems to be solved.
