If you haven't heard of ProfessorWatchList, then you should know that it is a conservative watchlist of professors from across the country who are viewed as anti-American. The stated "...mission of Professor Watchlist is to expose and document college professors who discriminate against conservative students, promote anti-American values, and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom." You know, promoting anti-American values by teaching stuff like intersectional feminism, institutional racism, gender and sexuality, rape culture etc. That kind of anti-American stuff. Several of our friends and professors are on the list. It is quite an honor. We thought we'd have a little fun and submit our own tip to the watchlist.
We find it fascinating that in the wake of this travesty of an election, the media has decided that their job is to normalize the alt-right and the white supremacists that are now being given platform's in this freshly updated version of neoliberal governmentality.
We would love for someone to explain how something like this can be normalized. How are white supremacists being given "glittery" profiles describing them as "dapper" in major media outlets? We'll tell you why, because the media has an important stake in this social project that we call white supremacy. The media has always been invested in white supremacy and it will continue to uphold that investment in white supremacy; the media is largely responsible for propelling the orange cheeto to the White House in the first place. As Harold Cruse argues in Crisis of the Negro Intellectual, black folks (and other folks of color) will have to create their own black cultural democracies because even "liberal" publications like Mother Jones work to uphold this mess.
Today I am paralyzed
and choked silent.
My mother reminded me this morning that we as people of color are particularly good at surviving conditions we were never meant to survive. This is what Audre taught us. This is what Assata taught us. This is what our ancestors did, this is what our parents did, this is what we will do. We will endure what is unjust, what is unlivable, what is dehumanizing, and don’t you ever forget that your survival is resistance.
Now, I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t drop a Lucille Clifton poem:
won’t you celebrate with me
what i have shaped into
a kind of life? i had no model.
born in babylon
both nonwhite and woman
what did i see to be except myself?
i made it up
here on this bridge between
starshine and clay,
my one hand holding tight
my other hand; come celebrate
with me that everyday
something has tried to kill me
and has failed.
